Stockport Green Party announces its 2024 manifesto

3 April 2024

With 2024 set to be a big year in politics, Stockport Green Party has chosen to update its manifesto, which outlines a greener, future for the borough and showcases the impact councillors have made over the last three years.

The Green Party vision for Stockport includes a host of socially focused initiatives, one of which is pushing for Stockport to become a pilot area for Universal Basic Income. Alongside this is a focus on building affordable housing, while prioritising mental health and homelessness initiatives.

But it wouldn’t be a Green Party manifesto without a similar focus on the environment. With promises to protect Green Belt land, plans to save mature and healthy trees from being felled, improvements to Stockport’s air quality by reducing emissions, and a campaign to achieve carbon neutrality by 2030, a full eight years earlier than the council's current target.

2023 saw a landmark victory for Stockport Greens, as three councillors were elected in Reddish South Ward. Councillors Gary Lawson and Liz Crix (front seated in photo) will continue to represent local residents as part of Stockport council, while councillor James Frizzell (front centre) will be up for re-election this May.

James said: “I'm very pleased that the new Stockport Green Party manifesto for 2024 has been launched. As with all things in the Green Party it has been a team effort. It shows clearly the things we aspire to in our brilliant borough, as well as the positive outcomes already achieved
from the work we are doing, for people and the planet.”

Alexander Drury, MP candidate for Cheadle and Gatley added: "I'm delighted to endorse the Party's new manifesto, which offers a vision of a fairer and greener place for us all to live. Although money is tight following 14 years of savage cuts to local government, there remain many improvements we can make at little cost,
