Reddish South projects proposed by Green Party Councillors get the go-ahead

2 February 2024

Green Party Councillors, Liz Crix, James Frizzell and Gary Lawson were delighted that community projects they proposed got the green light at the Heatons and Reddish Area Committee meeting on 22nd January.

Emma’s Pond is a naturally fed farm pond in the much-loved Reddish Vale. It has become shallow and overgrown due to invasive reeds and the silting up of the supply channel from Nicki’s Pond, uphill. It is said that these ponds were named after the daughters of a farmer at Woodhall Farm, before it was demolished.

Friends of the Vale will receive £4,500 from Reddish South ward’s discretionary budget, to get work started before the end of March. The pond will be restored to its original size, and native plant species will be planted to attract wildlife. The Friends of the Vale will provide seating, a viewing deck, a pond life interpretation board, and a low rail to protect dogs from falling in.

The rest of the discretionary budget will go towards the enhancement of the Grafton Street Play Area. £5,000 will pay for a new double bay swing frame and seats which allow children of a wide range of age and abilities to play together. The work to install the swing frame on a safer surface will start in the Spring.

Councillor Liz Crix says, “I am thrilled that we are able to make a significant contribution to projects which will increase biodiversity and will provide facilities for the local community to enjoy.”
