Stockport Green Councillors join protest calling for a ceasefire in Israel and Gaza

17 November 2023

Councillors Gary Lawson, Liz Crix and James Frizzell joined other members of Stockport Green Party and many local residents outside the Town Hall before the Stockport Council meeting on Thursday November 16th, to call for a ceasefire in Israel and Gaza.

The Green Party has consistently called for a full ceasefire to move towards a political solution to stop the killing, free hostages, protect civilians and ensure aid and fuel get in.

On November 1st both co-leaders, Carla Denyer and Adrian Ramsay, wrote to the UK government and Labour Party urging them to ‘listen to the people’ and join international calls for a ceasefire in the Israel-Gaza conflict.

Earlier this week the Scottish National Party proposed an amendment to the King’s Speech calling for a ceasefire. 126 MPs supported this, including Caroline Lucas, the sole Green MP. Disappointingly none of the 4 MPs who represent constituencies in Stockport voted for the amendment, and the vote was lost 126-293. Caroline said afterwards on X (Twitter): “We had chance to stand on right side of history - to move to political solution, stop the killing, free the hostages. MPs didn’t take it. So many voices in & outside parliament urging peace - we won’t give up.”
