Green Councillors’ concerns about Lancashire Hill estate to be addressed

6 October 2023

A motion tabled by Gary Lawson and James Frizzell, Green Councillors for Reddish South, at the Stockport Council meeting on October 4th has paved the way for ‘dire conditions’ in the Lancashire Hill flats to be tackled.

The Lancashire Hill estate only became part of the Reddish South ward through boundary changes this year. According to the Index of Multiple Deprivation 2019, Lancashire Hill is in the top 1% of most deprived areas nationally, with residents telling our Councillors that conditions have deteriorated further since then.

Problems identified in a motion to Stockport Council include fly tipping, rodent infestations, black mould, lifts and central heating breaking down together with safety and security concerns

Cllr Frizzell commented: “I am appalled at the dire conditions which residents here have to put up with. Some have told me they feel like 'the forgotten people of Stockport' and it is easy to see why. We must reverse the downward trajectory of infrastructure and services across the estate without delay."

At the Council Meeting Cllr Colin MacAlister, Cabinet member for Economy, Regeneration and Housing, thanked Cllrs Lawson and Frizzell for drawing his attention to this issue and offered to “convene a meeting with Cllr Lawson and his ward colleagues, representatives from Stockport Homes and such others as Cllr Lawson feels appropriate, so they can work together towards an action plan to address those concerns.”

As this achieves what Stockport Greens were aiming for the motion was withdrawn, and our Councillors look forward to working cooperatively towards an action plan.
