Stockport Greens celebrate election of their first Councillor

7 May 2021

Thursday May 6th 2021 will go down as a momentous day in the history of Stockport Green Party! 41 years after the founding of the branch, Gary Lawson has become the first Green to be elected to Stockport Metropolitan Borough Council. In the Reddish South ward Gary polled 2,010 votes, 557 more than the Labour incumbent, and nearly quadruple his 2019 vote.

Gary said: " I am very grateful to the voters of Reddish South ward for trusting me to be a new voice representing them and the local community as a whole. During the last two years my team and I have worked tirelessly to try to resolve issues that have been brought to my attention, and being elected as a local Councillor will enable me to have greater influence over these concerns.. "

Gary added: “I am honoured to be the first Green councillor on Stockport Council and will do everything I can to ensure that the Council's declaration of a climate emergency is followed by appropriate action. I will fulfil my promise to be independent and reject party politics, in order to do things differently and work for the common good.”

Gary Lawson joins a growing number of Green Councillors across Greater Manchester, with Tameside and Trafford having elected their first Greens in the last 3 years, and the possibility of more when other Councils declare results later today.
