Hazel Grove ward by-election candidate denounces road bypass plans

17 July 2019

Mike Padfield, Green Party candidate for the Hazel Grove ward by-election, has criticised Stockport Council’s plans to continue the search to fund the controversial A6-M60 bypass. The Council has twice had requests for government funding turned down but, thanks largely to pressure from Lib Dem and Conservative Councillors, is trying for a third time and has applied to the Greater Manchester Transport fund to cover £70 million of this.

Mike Padfield said:

“The bypass is being promoted on the basis of improving air quality around the A34 in Gatley and to provide an additional link to the airport from the M60, rather than for the benefit of the people of Hazel Grove.”

“The way to improve quality of life in Hazel Grove is by promoting healthier alternatives to car usage for short journeys and by improving public transport, not by building more roads (which cause more congestion as has been seen with the recently opened A6 Airport link road) and destroying the green belt which is at odds with the Council’s declaration of a climate emergency.“

The by-election for the Hazel Grove ward takes place on Thursday August 1st.
