Just as the Green Party nationally enjoyed its best ever showing in local Council elections, taking its number of Principal Authority Councillors from 168 to 362, Stockport Green Party celebrated an unprecedented level of support.
No fewer than 5 candidates broke the previous record percentage in a ward (13.5) with candidates in both Reddish wards polling near to 20% and finishing second to Labour. Second place was also achieved in Brinnington & Central ward.
Co-ordinator David Carter commented: “It feels like a breakthrough year for the Greens locally, as it is the first time that we have achieved a base to enable us to seriously challenge to elect our first Green Councillor and join colleagues in neighbouring authorities such as Tameside, Trafford and High Peak. Thank you to the record 6813 Green voters in Stockport who made this possible”
