Greens supported junior doctors in their strike

14 January 2016

The Green Party supported junior doctors in their strike action this week, with Stockport members joining staff on the picket line at Stepping Hill hospital along with members of Stockport United Against Austerity and Stockport NHS Watch.

Stockport Green Party spokesman Gordon Combe commented: “It was heartening to see so many members of the community giving support. The Government must rethink the way they’re treating our NHS. As a start they should negotiate with the doctors in good faith, and put forward the offer of a contract that is fair and works for staff and patients alike. Until then we’ll continue to stand in solidarity with the junior doctors as they fight for what’s right.”

The North West Green Party wrote to junior doctors a few days ago, saying: “We, the membership of the North West Green Party, would like to express our solidarity with you as you strike for fair contracts and the survival of the NHS.

“The current government seem determined to privatise the NHS, and have attacked it from every angle. A decent National Health Service, with fairly-paid well-treated workers and excellent standards of care, is absolutely worth paying for and could most certainly be afforded by our government if they considered it a priority.

“We applaud health workers for standing up to repeated attempts to erode the NHS, and we will continue to stand with you in defending this essential public service.”
