John has lived in Marple for 30 years where he brought up his two children and now has two grandchildren. He started his career at Rothamsted, the oldest agricultural research establishment in the world, where he first became interested in the environment. After gaining a PhD in Environmental Science he spent the rest of his career in biology teaching, lecturing and researching at schools, colleges and universities respectively. As a consequence he has a deep understanding of education, the climate crisis and feels very strongly that the Green Party is the only party that has the policies for a truly sustainable future.
One of John's sons works on improving the local railways and the other works on improving Universal Credit so he feels he also has an understanding of how our local transport and benefit system and social justice can be improved. John supports Stockport to become a pilot area for Universal Basic Income to help tackle social justice and inequality and wants a properly integrated and sustainable transport service, covering buses, trains, and trams with increased capacity, frequency and accessibility.
John is an active member of Climate Action Marple (CAM) formally known as Marple, Mellor, Marple Bridge Energy Saving Strategy (MESS) for which he writes a weekly climate crisis blog. He supports Greenpeace, Friends of the Earth, the Canal and River Trust, the Cheshire Wildlife Trust, RSPB and the British Trust for Ornithology for which he participates in a daily garden bird survey. Consequently, he has an understanding of what is required at an international, national as well as local level to tackle the climate and ecological crisis.
John is working for a sustainable future for our community, children, grandchildren and the common good.
