Heatons South 2023

Sophie Tyrrell

I have lived on the same estate in Heaton Norris all my life, and have raised my own family here. This depth of connection means that I have witnessed the erosion of green spaces for development, the increase in air pollution due to road and air traffic, and increasing inequality, all at local level.

I have been actively educating myself about environmental issues since I went to university 30 years ago, when I first experimented with boycotting single use plastics. A generation on, and I am weary of the idea that individual action alone can solve the enormous crisis in nature and climate, which threatens all our futures. I am angry at the time wasted by the major political parties who have been slow to organise around this issue, and who still have to convert many of their own members to this most urgent cause. This is why I joined the Green Party, the only party unified around the climate issue, and why I have worked hard to campaign locally to help bring the first Green Councillors to Stockport Council.

I am dedicated to telling the truth about climate change, and to working towards a just solution, which places the well being of everyone at the heart of government, both local and national.
